American Bishop gets BBC ‘Irish Night’ welcome at Levenshulme Festival

Bishop John S. Cummins the Roman Catholic Bishop Emeritus of Oakland California get a warm BBC Radio Manchester greeting when he visited this years Levenshulme Festival on Monday 29 October at M19 Bar in Levenshulme village. He was greeted at the live BBC Radio Manchester broadcast of ‘Irish Night’ by Irish presenter Evelyn Grealy whose own Irish roots stem from Ballyhaunis in County Mayo. The Bishop was accompanied by his cousin Cllr John Commons.


The packed event was to make the first anniversary of the venue’s legendary ‘Open Mic’ night which attracts performers from all over the world including acts from Australia. Amongst the guests and performers on the night were fiddle player Dezi Donnelly just back from a tour of Australia, the Rossonerri Celtic Rock band and Irish singer songwriter Denise Morgan.

Cllr John Commons said "The Bishop had just enjoyed a traditional Bacon and Cabbage meal hosted by Levenshulme residents Paul and Margaret Cawley who also come from Lahardane in County Mayo and then enjoyed a lovely evening of live Irish entertainment at m19 bar for the BBC Radio Manchester broadcast. He is just visting Levenshulme before he flies out to Rome, he really enjoyed his taste of Irish culture."

Evelyn Grealy the presenter BBC Radio Manchester’s ‘Irish Night’ said "It was a lovely surprise to see the Bishop and an honour to be able to broadcast his views live on BBC Radio Manchester."

Levenshulme is home to the biggest Irish community outside of London and it hosts regular weekly Irish music, Sport and Dancing events in its numerous Irish venues.
