Celebrity Artists help Levenshulme Teacher Stand Up for Cancer Charity

A host of High profile celebrity artists, photographers and sculptors have joined forces with a local Levenshulme teacher and local artists to stand up for a Charity Art Auction for Cancer.

The special event is being held at the Klondyke Club in Levenshulme on Friday 26 October as one of the major highlights of this years’ 2012 Levenshulme Festival.

42 year old Levenshulme Art teacher, Darren Nicoll is the main responsible for coming up with the idea for the Auction. When asked about why he was running the event he replied “Two years ago, I was locked in a battle with aggressive Lymphoma, stage 4 Cancer and was given the shocking news that I had only a 50-50 chance of survival.

My treatment consisted of eight chemo's and fifteen Radio Therapy sessions, to help me with my treatment I kept a creative journal throughout this time. Last year I was thankfully given the all-clear.

I wanted to do something to help the charities who had supported me through my treatment and three years ago I held my first Charity Art Auction. So far I have helped raise £7,000 for Cancer Charities.

Everyone has been really generous, my friend the celebrity photographer - Wolfgang Webster, has donated his iconic image of Tony Wilson which we have used for the poster design.

Some of this years highlights include Ian Brown prints by Anthony Mulryan, A Stone Roses print by Ian Tilton, Cartoons by the Award winning Tony Husband, Iconic images by Wolfgang Webster, A Craige Barker print signed tim burgess and a very special Amanda McCrann Mosaic.”

Tony Hennigan from the festival said “We are delighted to be able to support this event which has now become an annual fixture in the festival calendar. It is for a great cause and the whole Levenshulme community is right behind Darren and his team of helpers.”

Darren is appealing for artists, photographers and printmakers from the north west to donate paintings, photographs and prints to go under the hammer. To donate items just email Darren at

The auction will take place between 7.30-10.30pm followed by a party with DJs Phil Becket and Martin Glynn 10.30pm-1.30am. All the money raised at this year's auction will go to Call Plus: http://www.canceraid.co.uk

It is being organised by Nelly Globe which is a Social Enterprise Company set up by Darren which works with Cancer patients and other victims of Trauma to develop their Creative Skills. The company was set up as a tribute to his wife – Helen, who supported Darren throughout his own treatment.
